Design Problem
How might we help those that feel low on energy continuously and are unable to get done as much as they'd like to?

How the problem statement evolved
While conducting user research, I realized that the actual problem that people talked about laid elsewhere. See below to follow the journey
Define phase | Persona Map and Empathy Maps
Insights from define phase
Adding the right information to personas and empathy maps is important
Context is of prime importance when it comes to creating output documents from user research because even someone who wasn't involved in the process should be able to understand what was meant.
Adding more info to empathy maps can help build an affinity map
Creating personas and empathy maps after each round of user interview and then creating a group person and empathy map would be an even better tactic
Also finding pictures of personas isn't meant to be taken lightly!
Looking at what the updated problem statement is
Secondary research on Procrastination
Research on procrastination showed that some common reasons for procrastination include :
Lack of clarity (of what your goals are)
Lack of motivation (as to why you're doing what you're doing)
Perfectionism (to achieve 100% of your goal, if that feels like it'll be a difficult task, not even beginning at the fear of not having a perfect outcome)
Distressing situation in life (In which case therapy forms like REBT can help)
Research on existing solutions
It's not an under-researched area
It's a very common problem across all age groups
There are plenty of solutions : Trello, Todoist, Anydo, Wunderlist, Google keep, things +100 more
Inspiration

Ideation sessions with work colleagues (one day during tea time)
On Fun Friday events, we are encouraged to have UX non-work related session so I gathered 5-6 people and had a 1.5 hour session with them
Initially I briefed them on what the problem statement is. Then assumptions surrounding the topic were listed
Then past experience and techniques which people used to overcome procrastination was discussed. On the basis of that, people listed what all has worked for them, I also told them the best idea would be rewarded
We also had a voting (and later everyone was rewarded). One idea that was highly voted on, was SOCIAL VALIDATION

Idea of social validation in context and research
THE IDEA : SOCIAL VALIDATION
The idea that received most number of votes was that of creating an app where people upload their goals and their friends can see, comment and motivate them; Because they publicly committed to certain goals users'd want to save face and would end up following through them.
I wanted to do some research before going ahead with that
RESEARCH
Research conducted on goal sharing and motivation at NYU by Peter Gollwitzer. In 2009, Gollwitzer and his colleagues published research suggesting the simple act of sharing your goal publicly can make you less likely to do the work to achieve it

Evaluating the idea and moving forward
THE BIG QUESTION
The answer lies in notifications, when someone has been procrastinating on the goals for quite a bit, we could offer them points for
1. Opening the app, marking it done, coupons linking to real life deals for finishing run streak
2. Smaller benefits for just run streak (To prevent motivating people from just adding run streak for benefits)
3. Larger benefits for those that involve other app users and conduct and teach sessions for goal improvement (Dependent on goals for instance, conducting Skateboarding workshop, cooking classes)

Reflection
I've worked on this project in 2019 and made UI designs for it in April 2021.
The concept of procrastination, gamification, motivation is dear to me! I went to work on a board game project also - as an alternative to this problem. Do have a look at that!
